Red Pine

Wrestlers Tavern

Nestled in the heart of Estonia, the historic tavern stands as a living testament to the passage of time and the resilience of a family with a rich legacy. Erected over a century ago by the skilled hands of none other than the cousin of the legendary Estonian wrestler, George Lurich, this establishment carries with it a captivating history.

George Lurich, renowned as the most famous wrestler in Europe during the turn of the 20th century, undoubtedly left an indelible mark on his family. Inspired by his success and driven by a shared entrepreneurial spirit, Lurich’s cousin undertook the construction of a tavern that would soon become a local landmark.

The tavern’s inception, however, was not without its challenges. During the Soviet rule, the Lurich family ingeniously transformed their establishment into a speak-easy, providing a haven for locals seeking respite from the strict regulations of the time. The walls of the tavern, wrapped in secrecy, bore witness to clandestine conversations and shared laughter amid the backdrop of political uncertainty.

In a quirky turn of fate, the family’s resourcefulness during the Soviet era is reflected in the insulation of the tavern. Old Soviet newspapers, tinted with the faded hues of history and once propagators of official narratives, found a second life as insulation material within the walls of the speak-easy. Each layer of newsprint whispers tales of a bygone era, encapsulating the spirit of defiance and adaptation that defines the tavern’s legacy.

A unique facet of this historic building lies in its construction materials. Crafted from Red Pine, a wood renowned for its durability and strength, the tavern’s structure stands as a testament to the resilience of both the family and the establishment itself. Red Pine, known to be 50% stronger than pine, ensured that the tavern weathered the tests of time, preserving its character and charm.

Although it hasn’t functioned as a tavern for a great many years, it does serve as a living monument to the Lurich family’s journey and stands as a symbol of endurance, strength, and the enduring spirit of a community that found solace within its walls.
